One of the traditional Sámi livelihoods is gathering. It has concentrated in summer and autumn. The gathered berries and plants have been utilised fresh or dried. They have supplemented the nourishment gained from other traditional livelihoods.
The link between traditional livelihoods and culture is central in Sámi society. Livelihoods that are related to land use form the material basis for Sámi culture and identity and maintain the vitality of Sámi Homeland, the Sámi language, traditional knowledge, the relationship with nature, the social cohesion of Sámi culture and Sámi handicrafts.
